Campaign Buttons and Ideas on how to use political campaign buttons for a cause or event:
First, there are many reasons that a political or activist group might choose to use custom buttons for their cause. The organizer might (and very often does) want to explore many different channels for spreading their message quickly and effectively. There is, of course, television advertising: but this is often too spread out, and not personal enough to catch the attention of our social generation. There might be other types of advertisement (paper fliers, newspapers or magazines) but these may not be effective either (depending on demographics or readership).
The political campaign button is probably one of the more effective means of direct advertising. The consideration is this: it is a physical implementation of a goal or idea, and the message is carried around and delivered by a supporter of that message to all of their friends (who are likely the perfect target demographic for the particular event or political campaign). The person spreading the message might even be willing to provide buttons to their friends to wear as well, which has an almost “viral” effect. When you are given a pinback button, it’s very difficult not to put it on right away: at least for a little while. The metal disc hits our hands and it’s a very visceral reaction: we want to release the pin and poke it through our clothes, and proudly proclaim our support for Senator Jones! (or whoever) and we’re more than happy to let our friends know this fact as well!
And, while this “viral” effect may not be as quick to spread as social networking, in a sense it might be much longer lasting due to the commemorative nature of having a physical button that the person can carry with them, long after the event or election is over.
They are classy and iconic, and have been with our political landscape for generations. The campaign button will be with us, long into the future.
